Deaf Worlds

Deaf Worlds is a series of images selected from our workshops with children and young people in different schools for the Deaf in Durban. In common they have their narrative quality, as they were produced with the task of showing aspects of the children’s everyday life. Some of the images deal with specificities of deaf experience, such as isolation, rejection or difficulties in relating with hearing people, others show more joyful aspects of childhood. Many of these posed scenes have a painterly quality to them and once more demonstrate the highly developed visual skills of these young deaf people.
